12 Ex-Rosemead High School Students File Lawsuits Alleging Sexual Abuse

A graphic about Rosemead High School highlights lawsuits by 12 former students alleging sexual abuse by staff, including a tennis coach accused of abusing a 14-year-old girl.

El Monte Union High School District has been hit with multiple sexual abuse lawsuits from former students. 12 women named in two different complaints allege a history of sexual abuse and misconduct over the course of several years by Rosemead High School teachers, coaches, and administrative employees.

Last week, nine women filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles County Superior Court alleging sexual abuse that took place from 1992 to 2003 at Rosemead High School. When the alleged abuse occurred, the women were teenagers.

In May, three other women sued the El Monte Union High School District for sexual assault, again with allegations that the abuse occurred while they were minors attending Rosemead High School. The Rosemead High School child sexual abuse claims involve various staff, including a tennis coach who allegedly abused a 14-year-old girl.

The complaints allege a culture of sexual assault that protected abusers at Rosemead High School. Additionally, the women allege that they were groomed by teachers and school employees, and that administrators failed to report any incidents to police after coming forward with their allegations.

The Rosemead High School sexual abuse lawsuits further allege:

  • Students’ complaints were ignored
  • Internal investigations were conducted that led to no action being taken

The women are identified only as Jane Does in the complaint. The Los Angeles Times reported that the former Rosemead High School students asked to remain anonymous “for fear of retaliation from any supporters of the men whose names appear in the complaint.”

The Times further reported that some of the women did not realize that they were victims of sexual abuse until the release of a Business Insider article “brought them back to what they had endured.”

The article, “The Predator’s Playground” by journalist Matt Drange, was released in October 2023 and reported on a culture of rampant sexual abuse, including allegations made against his former journalism advisor (Drange is a Rosemead High School alumnus). Teachers allegedly sent students inappropriate text messages and administrators ignored complaints of misconduct.

The suits accuse El Monte Union High School District of negligence and allowing perpetrators to continue the cycle of sexual abuse against students.

The May lawsuit names three defendants in addition to El Monte Union High School District:

  • Rosemead High tennis coach Wing Chan
  • Former teacher Alex Rai
  • Former cross-country coach Eduardo Escobar

The plaintiffs describe being fearful of becoming pregnant while undergoing the sexual abuse, as well as living with constant anxiety.

Authorities believe there may be additional victims who previously attended Rosemead High School. Students who currently attend Rosemead may also have been victimized by sexual predators.

The Los Angeles Times reported that one of the women named as a Jane Doe plaintiff urged current students at Rosemead High School who may be victim to come forward. “Please know that you’re not alone,” she said, according to the Times.

The El Monte Union High School District said it “cannot comment on pending litigation,” but released the following statement:

“With that said, The District is deeply committed to the success of its students, and we work diligently to foster positive learning environments and ensure the safety, security, and well-being of all students entrusted to our care. We do not tolerate any behavior that undermines those values and we take swift and decisive action if we suspect student safety is being compromised in any way.”
