A Yucca Valley, California, Middle School Teacher has been arrested on suspicion of possessing child pornography material, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.

Officials arrested Joseph Borges III, 48, a La Contenta Middle School teacher, on Monday after detectives received a cyber tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) concerning child sexual abuse material.
Borges was identified as the suspect and subsequently arrested and booked at Morongo Basin Jail in Joshua Tree for violation of PC 311.11(a) Possession of Child Pornography. His bail was set at $40,000, according to the Victorville Daily Press. The middle school teacher has since been released from custody, sheriff’s booking records confirmed.

As of Tuesday, the Victorville Daily Press reported that the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office had yet to file criminal charges against Borges.

La Contenta Middle School, where Borges taught, is part of Morongo Unified School District. Morongo school district officials addressed the arrest of Borges via social media Tuesday, noting that counseling services were being made available for students.

Upon learning of the arrest, The Morongo Unified School District took immediate action to ensure the safety of our students and staff,” district officials stated.

Administrators stated that the district has a “zero-tolerance policy for any behavior that puts the well-being of its students at risk,” according to a report from KESQ Channel 3.

We know that news of (Borges’) arrest will impact our entire community and counseling services will be made available to students when they return from Thanksgiving break,” Superintendent Patricio Vargas stated. “The allegations against Mr. Borges are deeply troubling and go against the values and principles we hold dear in our school district.”

Whether any La Contenta Middle School students have been identified as victims is currently unconfirmed, according to various media outlets.

Superintendent Vargas also stated that the district will continue to take “all necessary steps to address this situation and support our community during this challenging time.”

Online Child Sexual Abuse Material Increasing

Child sexual abuse material (CSAM) can be used to exploit children through pornography. With the rise of artificial intelligence (AI), CSAM has increased substantially. Websites such as NCMEC’s Take it Down help kids and teens remove online sexually exploitative content.

Additionally, victims of this type of crime may be eligible for financial compensation through a civil lawsuit with Dordulian Law Group’s California sexual abuse attorneys.
